![]() THERE are fears that some quarters might be entertaining the idea of postponing next year’s presidential elections to enable elective government officials to hold on to their juicy positions for a few more years. This, despite the fact that administration officials have been assuring the public that President Arroyo will leave Malacañang at 12 noon on June 30, 2010 when her six-year term ends. Admittedly, this is the problem that the government continues to face. While supporters of the administration believe that the President is not interested in extending her term, critics and political opponents think otherwise. But pro-administration groups said the recent appointment of the seventh member of the Commission on Elections, now chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Jose Melo, is proof that Mrs. Arroyo is determined to push through with the forthcoming elections. The appointment of provincial prosecutor Elias Yusoph as Comelec commissioner completed the composition of the seven-member poll body, which supervises the country’s national, local, and barangay elections. Other members of the poll body are Commissioners Rene Sarmiento, Nicodemo Ferrer, Leonardo Leonida, Lucenito Tagle, and Armando Climaco Velasco. The current composition of the Comelec assures diversity or broad sectoral representation. The Comelec, a constitutonally independent body, has a gargantuan task ahead as the country braces for the potentially most expensive balloting ever in the country’s history. Expensive not only for the Comelec but also for the candidates themselves. The only poll commissioner who rose from the ranks, Velasco used to head the Cordillera Administrative Region Office of the Comelec. Hopefully, Yusoph’s appointment and the order of President Arroyo to speed up the merger of Lakas-CMD and her Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino will convince the public that the administration is now preparing for next year’s balloting. Reports said the Chief Executive wants to see the merger of Lakas-CMD and Kampi to ensure the victory of administration candidates in 2010. This, in the view of some sectors, is another proof that the President is not one of those government officials who want to hold on to power like leeches. http://www.journal.com.ph/index.php?issue=...sec=9&aid=84709 -------------------- |
